my uncle jasper was a pretty cool guy, my first memories of listening to a guitar were provided by him, he used to come over and play back when i was only about 4 yrs old, back in the days when my parents still partied up a bit
he died of lung cancer a couple weeks back, sad yes.. but the man had a good life, i didnt realize how many friends he had until the wake
after the funeral his wife told me that i could come over to their house and have my choice of anything i wanted to remember him by
i had his old guitar in mind but unfortunately it seems he got rid of it.. darn!
and so im looking around his attic and all i can see is junk, I finally grabbed a couple of bookends to take with me, but just before i head downstairs i spied a trunk, an old army trunk
Im thinking... hey cool i can store all kinds of stuff in here, the thing looked like it could survive a nuclear blast
when i opened it up.... it was jackpot
this truck was full of vinyl records, 231 to be exact not counting the double/triple sets
the stones.. original london labels
beatles.. original capital rainbow labels, sgt. peppers with the cutout sheet, magical mystery tour with the booklet still glued in, etc..
miles davis
the who
santana
the dead.. live dead, i believe this has been outta print for awhile
mott the hoople
jeff airplane
etc etc etc
every last one in mint condition, i kid you not, not a rip, not a tear, not a scratch, many have the plastic wrap still on them with just the end slit enough to get the album out
for the last 2 days ive been sitting here reading all these liner notes and looking at the artwork
I feel overjoyed to have these records, but at the same time i also get a sense of sadness as well, sad because the nostalgic side of me that grew up listening to albums feels that the time of conceptual tomes may be coming to an end, it seems were heading back to the days before rubber soul and revolver, back to the days when the single was king
anyway, thank you Jap, rip my man...........
